Hines Creek Composite School hosts 1A basketball provincials
From March 19 to March 21, 2015 Hines Creek Composite School (HCC) will host the top 12 senior boys basketball teams in Alberta from the 1A division at their school for provincial play.
“We are very excited to host provincials at our school” says HCC Principal Sherri MacDowall. “Hines Creek Composite is the hub of our community and the opportunity to gather everyone together for this exciting event is awesome. We are thankful to have such a giving community and school division who have and continue to extend their outstanding support.”
The three days of provincial basketball play will kick off with breakfast for the teams at the Dave Shaw Arena and will use a unique form of transportation to the school where opening ceremonies will take place. Players, coaches and dignitaries will arrive to the school in style on horse drawn wagons as arranged by the Peace Draft Horse Club (PDHC).
“We have 12 horse teams coming from all over the peace country to escort players to the opening ceremonies” says Riley Buker, PDHC member. “As far as we know, something like this has only been done in Williams Lake for a high school rodeo. We are thrilled to treat our players, coaches and special guests to this unique experience.”
The opening ceremony is set for 10:00 am and will consist of opening remarks from community, municipal and school division leaders and showcasing local Aboriginal and Veselka dancers.
Provincial play will begin on Thursday March 19, 2015 at 11:00 am with the championship game scheduled for 7:30 pm on Saturday March 21, 2015. All games will be broadcast on a live feed for family, friends and fellow athletes across the province here. Photos of game play and social events will be posted on the Hines Creek Composite’s official Facebook page, Twitter and Instagram accounts throughout the weekend.
“Hosting provincials is an awesome opportunity to showcase the school, community and provides the surrounding region with the opportunity to see kids playing at a provincial level” says Marg McCuaig-Boyd, ASAA Executive member at large. “It gives the players a strong sense of pride to play at home in front of family and friends.”
The school applied to host provincials in October 2014 through a video submission to the Alberta School Athletics Association (ASAA). HCC school community members and organizations also extended their support for the school to host the event in the video submission. The school was chosen through a voting process based on their ability to host the event along with the support of the community.
“It is no surprise that Hines Creek Composite was chosen to host the 1A basketball Provincials” says Peace River School Division Board Chair Darren Kuester. “The school and community are one in the same and have a strong sense of spirit demonstrated both educationally and athletically. We are very proud of the school, are grateful for the support of the school community and wish the players, coaches, parents and entire community a wonderful weekend of Provincial play.”
A banquet is planned for Thursday evening with guest speakers and live entertainment. Chris Nicol, local motivational speaker, physical education expert and basketball coach from Grande Prairie Regional College will deliver an inspirational keynote. Paul Isaak, also known as the “Funny Juggler” will entertain players and special guests with what is described as a “high energy comedy show.”
The event will bring hundreds of people to Hines Creek and surrounding communities with approximately 150 players and family members attending. If anyone is interested in volunteering please contact Lynne Wilson at 780-834-7633.
"On behalf of the residents of Hines Creek and surrounding area, we extend a warm welcome to all players, coaches, parents and spectators” says Hazel Reintjes, Hines Creek Mayor. “We hope you enjoy your time in the community and a great weekend of camaraderie and competition.”
